Large aircraft will be able to land in Greenland’s capital city Nuuk from 28th November 2024 thanks to the construction of a longer runway and state-of-the-art international airport terminal. Two other airports in Greenland are also currently under construction, scheduled to open by the end of 2026 in Ilulissat and Qaqortoq.
The new airports will initially be served by exciting carriers Air Greenland and Icelandair, but the expansion opens the doors to more direct flights from the US and Europe. Direct scheduled flights will begin from Copenhagen in Denmark to Nuuk, with five weekly flights carrying more than 300 passengers, increasing to six during the festive season. In summer 2025, US carrier United Airlines will host their inaugural flight from New York to Nuuk.

Mark Hawkins, Managing Director of Smart Aviation, said: “The opening of this new airport in Nuuk is fantastic news for the aviation industry as it opens up the Arctic territory to a whole host of opportunities and further expansion for other airlines and charters. The Smart charter team is already in communication with some of our agent partners looking to grow capacity into the country”.
