From 2025, anyone travelling to the UK will require a UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation).
Who needs to apply for an ETA?
All visitors to the UK must apply for a UK ETA before they travel, regardless of their purpose, unless they are exempt.
- Applications for EU Nationals open from 5 March for travel on or after 2 April 2025
- Applications for non-EU nationals travelling on or after 8 January 2025 are already open
Exemptions:
- British and Irish passport holders, and diplomats
- Those with existing permission to enter or remain in the UK
How to apply for a UK ETA
The fastest way to apply is using the UK ETA app. Applications take up to 3 working days to process. They are valid for two years.
How does the UK ETA requirement affect private charter flights?
Airlines and operators of private flights are connected to the UK Border Force system, allowing them to send Persons On-Board Flight Information in advance of the flight to gain authorisation for each passenger to fly.
If any passenger requiring a UK ETA does not have one, it could be too late to apply and be issued with one before departure. Therefore, our advice to passengers is to apply as soon as you are able to.
